No Critics. No Walls. No Rules | The Dr Martens signature silhouette is providing a new canvas. Paying homage to the most iconic pieces of Japanese art.
The Dr Martens x THE MET 1460 boot is inspired by Under the Wave off Kanagawa or The Great Wave as its more commonly known, painted roughly in late 1831. The boots feature Masterpiece leather uppers, leather/textile inners, 8 pairs of antique gold eyelets and are built upon the classic AirWair Bouncing sole. The Great Wave 1460 boots are fastened together with round tonal laces with antique gold aglets and are highlighted by the iconic Goodyear construction with yellow z welt stitching.
Masterpiece is a coated leather with a fine grain texture, designed to imitate the feel of art canvases.
The inscription on the back of the boots translates to: Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji / On the high seas in Kanagawa / Under the wave.
The Great Wave painting depicts a large wave, framing a distant view of Mount Fuji, and two small fishing boats. Hokusai may have been trying to create a narrative that seemingly showed a wave about to crush the fisherman desperately clutching there oars. It may have been Hokusai's wish to construct an idea that the ocean should be respected but feared.
