Although traditionally, steel was used for the protective tip on the end of safety boots this has since been replaced by a choice of composite materials. Although some boots still use steel, many boots are made with hard plastic or aluminium. These materials are just as tough as steel and stand up to the same levels of testing as the steel toe capped shoes, but they have the advantage of being lighter and cheaper.
